Cycles of Human Development
Nature subjects us to very many tasks as we live through our infancy, childhood, teenage years, youth and early adulthood. These tasks are meant for us to master motor, cognitive, social and emotional skills in the main. Pamela Levine discovered that life tasks repeat when we cross 26 years of age. She called them seasons of life. They occur in repeating 13 year and 19 year cycles. The 13 year cycle forms part of the first 19 year cycle. We clear five stages in the 13 year cycle and 10 stages (two sets of five stages) in the 19 year cycle. The five stages are called being, doing, thinking, identity and skills stages. They last for 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, 36 months and 72 months in the 13 year cycle and first 13 years of the 19 year cycle and for 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 18 months and 36 months in the remaining 6 years of the 19 year cycle. Each stage is meant to empower us with related skills. They are briefly explained here:
Being: Enjoying peace, comfort and let be. Becoming capable to adjust to a new environment.
Doing: Engaging in motor, cognitive, social and emotions related activities to become conversant with them in new environments.
Thinking: Using thinking faculties to satiate inquisitiveness, creativity and innovation.
Identity: Becoming adept in surviving through pulls and pushes of challenging environments. Building new freedom boundaries.
Skills: Mastering associations, new and learnt skills, bettering oneself in new fields.
I believe that we are tasked to clear developmental challenges through the first 38-39 years of our life. By then we have cleared three 13 year cycles and two 19 year cycles. We happen to live a challenging life from our 40th year of life. Those of us who live in stressful conditions succumb to somatic ailments around that age.
